The Masthugget quarter

Masthugget, one of Gothenburg's earliest quarters, grew during the 17th century. The name Masthugget came from the many mast makers located on the south bank of the river. There were also many boat houses, wooden warehouses, tar boilers and wharfs. The buildings were mainly simple wooden houses on the hill. Many mariners and dock workers lived here.

Today not very much is left, and instead you can see early and late 20th century buildings. Masthugget today is characterised by a mixture of residential buildings, offices and shops. There are many restaurants, antique shops and record stores in the area.

From the church Masthuggskyrkan
on the hill over the tourist hostel you can enjoy a fantastic view over the city and the harbour entrance, as well as towards Vinga in the distance.
